Pipes replace voices
The skirl and twirl of two pipe band-, took the place of the Wizard and his cohorts in the Square at midday yesterday. The regular speakers did not even turn up at Speakers Corner because the City Council had closed it to public speaking to give the bands a chance to attract an audience. The Timaru City and Wanganui Highland Pipe Bands sweltered under their busbies in the muggy atmosphere. The bands spent alxiut half an hour each play ing in the Square before wailing off around the streets of central Christchurch.
