as material witnesses and released in their own recognisance. The five were returning from Goose Creek, South Carolina, after a visit to a “root doctor” who had reportedly provided them with a potion to exorcise Mrs Council’s daughter. New Jersey state police said. The police said while they were travelling north in the car, Miss Council was bound and a towel put around her face while being fed the potion — which included ammonia and turpentine — as part of the ritual.
