Locarno shapes well at Motukarara trials

Locarno showed that he may be a force to reckon with in the Cashmere Two-year-old Stakes at Addington Raceway next Monday night when he won his heat of the juvenile event in style at the Motukarara trials yesterday. A Local Light-Bravine colt prepared at Greenpark by Robin Butt, Locarno improved from the third line to follow Beaufort and Del’s Angel into the straight and in the last 150 metres buried the others for finishing speed. Locarno won by three lengths from Lord Module, a Lordship colt in Cecil Devine’s stable, and ran the 2000 metres in 2:54.8. He was privately timed to run his last 800 in 1:06.8 and the final 400 in 31.4 sec. Although soundly beaten, Lord Module’s effort was also promising. He improved three places in the last 200 metres and beat Beaufort, which had tried for an all-the-way win, by half a length. Local Light was also the sire of the second-heat winner Trevan. which, like Locarno and Lord Module, is an acceptor for the Cashmere Two-year-old Stakes. Trevan, which is prepared by Trevor Husband but was handled by Owen Quinlan, finished determinedly from mid-field for a half-length victory over the pacemaker. Ruling Play, but was not as impressive as Locarno in running the distance in 2:59.9. The winner and runner-up had the finish to themselves. Harley made ground for third but was in a gap of 4| lengths. He beat Racing Time, second-equal on the home turn, bv a length. Of the 11 pacers which

{qualified to start at totalisa--1 tor meetings none was more (impressive than Royal College, winner of the sixth heat. This three-year-old brother to the former highclass pacer. Royal Count, left his seven rivals to it in the fastest heat of the day. He paced the 2400 metres in 3:17.2 and won by four lengths from Steady Way. i Royal College will have his first race for his Springston owners, G. S. and N. S. Benny, in the Second Templeton Stakes at Addington Raceway next Monday night. Royal College’s heat was run when conditions were at their best. A stiff head wind in the back straight had a marked effect on the times of some of the would-be qualifiers in the earlier heats and those held later in the day had to cope with a strong northerly in the run home.
