CHIEF OF CHIEFS
PA Hamilton The next Ariki Nui—chief of chiefs—of Rarotonga has ibeen formally baptised in the waters of the Waikato River at Hamilton. Mr Te Whero Where Tawhioa Kainuju Waikai was fully immersed in the rare ceremony, conducted by two ministers of the Church of the United Pentecostal.
He is expected to fly to the Cook Islands next week to take part in the formal initiation ceremonies, during which he will be invested with his hereditary titles of Ariki Nui. It will be only his third visit to the Cook Islands. Mr Waikai, aged 66. has Jived almost all his life in New Zealand. He lives in retirement at Taupiri at present. His father, the last Rarotogan chief of chiefs, married a Maori princess; and Mr Waikai is an uncle of the Maori Queen, Dame te Atairangikaahu.
