Many enrol for Maori festival
About 50 jeople have enroled for the Te WaahiPounamu Maori arts festival which will begin in Christchurch on Sunday. The publicity officer for the festival (Mr B. Waipara) said that 30 people enrolled over the week-end and a further 20 yesterday. Sponsored by the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, the week-long festival is being held at the Teachers’ Training College at. Ham. Artists and instructors! from all over New Zealand! will be at the festival, one ofl which is Mrs H. K. TawhaiJ of Gisborne, who will teach! weaving. Mr Waipara said that) people from all over the) South Island were interested in attending the festival and! some of those already en-l
rolled were from Invercargill and the West Coast. The first major festival of its kind to be held in the South Island, the Te WaahiPounamu festival provides an opportunity to learn traditional and modern Maori arts. Included in the programme are carving, creative dance, poi, poetry, flax weaving, tukutuku, taiahai drill, and taniko. Each person can choose! two arts for the first half of) the week and then has the! (opportunity to learn an-! | other two arts in the second I half. I The festival programme I also includes entertainment. I with such things as a wine j and cheese evening and a ) cabaret. On Monday, January 'l7, a public concert will be ! held at 8 p.m. at. the 'teachers’ college.
