The occasion was a visit last week by a group of Americans to the Russian scientific station at Vostok, 690 miles from McMurdo Station. The visitors were greeted at the Russian base by Dr R. Johnson, an American exchange scientist who has spent the last year there. They were treated to a turkey dinner; then the Russians and Americans exchanged gifts and souvenirs. The Americans also presented the Russians with 1901 b of fresh vegetables and about 1001 b of Antarctic cod w’hich was transported to the station by a U.S. Navy Hercules shown in the picture.
