Rory widens his field

Rory Gallagher “Calling Card” (Chrysalis L 35973): Rory is changing with the times. While he offers some strong songs in the old raw, aggressive vein there are also some refreshing moves here into jazz and sheer funk. His band — Lou Martin (keyboards), Gerry McAvoy (bass) and Pod de’Ath (drums) — ’s brought to the fore and without losing his intensity Rory incorporates them ' fully into the numbers. Even as the album opens the mood is solid,

easy-going and danceable, organist Martin persisting with a compelling riff in “Do You Read Me” as Rory wings along in raw voice and guitar.

“Secret Agent.” opening the pther side, is another knock-out with an arresting guitar riff and singing from deep in the heart.

“Jack-knife Beat” successfully contrasts the sharpness of his guitaring with a loose jazzy mood and the title track is again jazzy, with a restrained solo in the middle. Elsewhere it’s the usual dose of aggression and the token rag number, and all seems to be well with Rory.
