Oil shares prominent on quiet Aust. market
Oil shares stood out prominently in a quiet trading session on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Observers said that traditionally the last trading week of the year is quiet and subdued, with most investors and traders away on holidays. Today will mark the last full day of trading before the end of the year, and the ! market will close at noon to- ' morrow.
Under the current low level of trading, the performance of Santos, WoodsideBurmah A.A.R. and Ampol Exploration attracted keen attention. Observers attributed this to last week’s agreement between the 10 Cooper Basin producers, and reports that oil exploration will more than double next year.
Santos gained 15c to 145 c, while A.A.R. and .WoodsideBurmah advanced 5c each in sympathy.
~ Central Norseman was another bright spot, rising 15c to 255 c. Peko-Wallsend, W.M.C. and Thiess recorded rises of up to sc. However, Bougainville. B.H. South, North B.H. and Cons. Gold were easier.
B.H.P. closed with an 8c gain at 744 c, but the Wales retreated 4c to 496 c. The National was well supported, closing with a 5c improvement at 265 c, and Amatil and ICI were marginally better.
