London prices mixed
Share prices closed on a mixed note in traditionally quiet trading on the London Stock Exchange last Thursday
The “Financial Times” industrial index closed at 344.7, for a gain of 5.2 points on the shortened week. Tobacco shares retreated after another report on the effects of smoking. BritishAmerican Tobacco fell Bp. Government bonds gained one-eighth of a point after being down half-a-point on Wednesday when the terms of the E750.0M long “tap” stock were announced.
The market began last week on slightly firmer note after profit-taking had given way to small buying interest.
On Wednesday, the market was firm, but quiet. Dealers attributed Ihe higher trend to institutional demand, hut thin conditions exaggerated price movements, they said.
Australian shares were generally easier throughout the week, partly caused by the declining trend on the Sydney market, and partly by an increase in the dollar investment premium—the result of revaluations of the Australian dollar.
