Holiday toll five
PA Wellington The road toll for the hobI day period since 4 p.m on Christmas Eve now stands The latest victim was a motor-cycle pillion passen ger. Julia Patrick t’ka. aged 20. of Newtown. Wellington. who was killed when the machine ran off Breaker Bas Road on Tues day night. A Wellington taxi-driver died in hospital on Tuesday evening but the crash in which he suffered serious injuries occurred a week earlier, and his death is not therefore counted in the ■ toll for the holiday period. ; The road toll at the same i time during the 1975-76 I holiday period was 17, according to the Ministry of I .Transport. A Ministry i spokesman expressed satis I faction at the lower road ' toll now. There have been 41 road i deaths this month, com pared with 70 for the whole of December. 1975. J So far this year. 591 people hate been killed on j New Zealand roads, com pared with 607 at the same i point in 1975.
