NZPA Hobart The top sloop. Ballyhoo, gave the yachtsman Jack Rooklyn his first long-sought-after victory in the Sydney-to-Hobart race. Surrounded by sight-seeing ferries and more than 30 small craft, Ballyhoo crossed the finish line in Hobart at 9.59 p.m. last night (N.Z. time) to end the 630-mile journey in three days, seven hours. 59 minutes and 26 seconds — more than 17 hours over the record Thousands of well wishers lined the foreshore of the Derwent River to give Rooklyn and his crew a traditional welcome to th? sound of cheers and honking car horns. At last report Rooklyn s other vessel, Apollo, sailed by his 19-year-old son, Warwick, was about 50 miles behind Ballyhoo and set to be second across the line.
