Bilby calls it a day
PA Wellington Wellington’s “senior professional,” Graham Bilby, yesterday announced his retirement from first-class i cricket. The third-round Shell series encounter, starting today at the Hutt Recreation [Ground, will be Bilby’s swan[song. Bilby, aged 35, said his job and family commitments were his reasons for stepping down. He had intended to play in all of Wellington’s first five matches before withdrawing but business pressure forced him to hasten his exit.
‘Til continue to play for my club, Kilbimie. but I won't be available for Wellington again,” said Bilby. His departure will leave a gaping hole in Wellington’s middle-order batting, and lessen the side’s catching ability behind the wicket. After making his firstclass debut in the 1962-63 season Bilby rose to become one of the finest opening batsmen and slip fieldsmen in the country.
