Maritime mercy dash
A sick Russian seaman was admitted to Christchurch Hospital last night after his ship made a 40mile dash to meet a Lyttelton Harbour Board launch outside the Lyttelton Heads.
The man was thought to have undergone an operation for appendicitis aboard the Russian vessel. He is shown below walking
down the gangplank to the Orari. which took hint to Lyttelton and a waiting St John ambulance.
Dr E. R. Muncaster, who met the seaman on the wharf, said it appeared that he had undergone surgery on the ship and was in good condition.
A Lyttelton Harbour Board pilot, Captain A. K.
Mobbs, accompanied the Orari to meet the Russian ship, a stem trawler of about 3000 tons.
Had conditions prevented a transfer at sea, Captain Mobbs would have piloted the Russian vessel to a berth at Lyttelton.
The seaman’s condition was not available late last evening.
