Search for kakapo
PA Wellington An expedition will go to Stewart Island in January and February to search for the rare native parrot, the kakapo. The search will be made by the Wildlife Division of the Internal Affairs Department, under the sponsorship of the National Provident Fund.
The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said in a statement that the fund had decided to become associated with the objective of wildlife protecttion, as part of its advertising programme. A number of unconfirmed sightings of kakapo have been made on Stewart Island in recent years, but the last confirmed sighting was in 1940.
