TALKING TURKEY

The weeks just before Christmas are a good time to be lucky. There are invariably hampers to be won and countless raffles are drawn that will make the season even more festive for the fortunate winner. Hams and turkeys are prizes that go down well and there is probably many a husband who has had all forgiven when he has arnved home late at night from a Christmas social with a ham or a turkey under his arm. Sports clubs, too, find

such items popular prizes for pre-Christmas events. But sometimes lady luck is disinclined to spread her favours. There was a bowling club in Christchurch which had turkeys as the prizes at a Decemoer open tournament It held. The prizes were duly handed out at the end of the day and the winners sat down well satisfied with their rewards. A little while later the results were announced of a series of turkey raffles, which had been run over some weeks and for

which there were more than 200 ticket-holders. Two of the first three winning names announced belonged to men who had earlier won their Christmas dinner. And one of the names was called again when the fourth and final winner was announced. So it was that the man eventually staggered home to his disbelieving family bearing three turkeys. His wife, however, was not especially impressed. She had bought one just two days earlier.
