More storms today?
Yesterday’s thunderstorms and periodic downpours were caused by' freak atmospheric conditions over most of the South Island, according to the Christchurch weather office.
The same unstable weather could be expected again today, a forecaster
for the Meteorological Service predicted. The weather was paused by a layer of cold air. up to 20,000 ft thick, which covered much of the South Island yesterday. Air near the ground was heated by the sun, and rose through the layer of cold air “like a bubble through a puddle.”
‘This process can cause
electrical storms and short but torrential rainstorms—which is what happened from Dunedin to Christ church and on the West Coast yesterday,” the forecaster said.
Similar conditions would exist “for today at least and possibly on Friday," he said.
