Bulknes dispute
Sir, •— I was shocked by the decision of the Shipping Industrial Tribunal on the dispute over the Bulknes. After many years at sea and subsequently in work connected with ships I am con® vinced that masters do not give bad discharges lightly and without good reason. By this decision, as well as some previous decisions it is apparent that expediency is the aim of the tribunal rather than right and justice. I am surprised that the Merchant Service Guild is not more active in opposing this continuing erosion of the powers of the master. As one senior master said to me, “We still have all the responsibility with none of the authority.” How a master is expected to do his job under these conditions is something that the Ministry
of Transport and the Shipping Industry Tribunal should well consider. — Yours, etc., A. E. BALDWIN. December 18, 1976.
