West Coast forests
Sir, — It is galling to learn that the Minister of Forests believes it is “environmentally important” to destroy the magnificent stand of kahikatea forest at the mouth of the Waiho River near Franz Josef. The Waiho forest would have been a major addition to the attractions of an extended national park. Its destruction is to be deeply regretted. Pitifully few areas of kahikatea forest are left. Those that remain should not swaps with private companie be further reduced by land swaps with private companies. If it is necessary to acquire areas of privately owned forest then the land should be purchased by the State. I believe the public is sufficiently concerned for the future of our native forests to pay the small price involved. The alternative, the continuing destruction of our kahikatea forests, is intolerable. It is a national disgrace. — Yours, etc., KEVIN D. SMITH, December 15, 1976.
