Relay record bid
A special attempt to break the New Zealand 4 x 800 metres relay will be made during the annual Pat Boot Memorial track and field meeting at Queen Elizabeth Il Park today. However, the chances of a new time being set are slim. The record stands at 7min 27.25ec and to improve on this each runner in the successful team will have to average Imin 51sec. The coach of the University Shirley team, probably ] the strongest team in the [ relay, is Mr Brian Taylor 'and he is not confident of breaking the record at this stage of the season. He sees it as a trial run for an even more determined attempt later in the season. Nevertheless, the University team should go close. Its team will consist of Andrew Stark, Brian Rhodes, Bruce Hunter and either Callum Muir or Bruce Milne. Stark ran the distance in Imin SO.lsec last Saturday and Hunter, a former national champion, has run Imin 48sec.
The High School Old Boys team appears to be almost as strong. It will be led by the New Zealand 800 metres champion, Rendell Mclntosh. Also in the line-up are the New Zealand 400 metres hurdles champion, David Long, and another national 800 metres place-getter, Trevor Cochrane. The fourth man will be Dennis Brown, an athlete showing a lot of promise this season. Brown was runner-up in the special mile last Saturday.
The other lanes could be taken up by a composite team from other clubs and a team from Otago. The Pat Boot meeting, traditionally relay orientated, is iopen to all clubs in the South Island but it has been [dominated by the strong J Technical club for many years. Because of the [strength of Christchurch I clubs, other clubs from outIside the city have lost interlest in competing.
Tennis.—Jaime Fiilol. of Chile, will meet Corrado Barazzutti in the first match of the 1976 Davis Cup tennis final between Chile and Italy in Santiago which begins today.
