THE CATHOLIC MASS WE OLDER CATHOLICS grew up knowing only one kind of Moss. And banned indeed by, in many cases, the very same Bishops who so recently insisted on its importance! It's surely an odd performance. What else is banned in the Church? You can apparently doubt that Christ is God or that the Pope can be infallible (Father Hans Kung openly doubts both and is still “in good standing"); you can support homosexuality, clamour for the ordination of women-priests, ridicule the value of Priestly celibacy, hold a Rock Mass", teach pornography in Catholic Schools, even abandon the vows of the Priesthood ("not always a bad thing says a seminary rector!) —do all this and welcome BUT ATTEND OR SAY OUR OLD LATIN MASS? Clearly making full use of his authority os Vicar of Christ and Head of His Church, Pope St. Pius V decreed in the Bull “Quo Primum" ("which shall have the force of law in perpetuity') July 14th 1570: "In order that all everywhere may adopt and observe what ho* been delivered to them by the Holy Roman Church, Mother and Mistress of the other churches. It shall be unlawful henceforth and forever throughout the Christian world to »ing or to read Masses according to any formula other than that of this Missal published by Us.” "HEREWITH AND BY VIRTUE OF OUR APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY”. We give and grant IN PERPETUITY that for the singing or reading of Mass in any church whatsoever this Missal may be followed absolutely, without any scruple of conscience or fear of Incurring any penalty, and may be freely and lawfully used. “We LIKEWISE ORDER and decree that no-one whosoever shall be forced or coerced Into altering this Missal; and that THIS PRESENT CONSTITUTION CAN NEVER BE REVOKED OR MODIFIED, BUT SHALL FOREVER REMAIN VALID AND HAVE THE FORCE OF LAW" . . . Accordingly, no man whosoever is permitted to infringe or roshly contravene this notice of Our permission, statue, ordiance, commond, direction, grant, Indult, declaration, will, decree and prohibition . . .’’ Naturally this directive made to PROTECT the mass has not been annulled or revoked. The Catholic Church does not contradict Herself. So to “ban" that Mass is an act of disobedience to the Council of Trent (from which the Mass gets the name “Tridentine"), and to which Bishops consecrated before 1967 swore an oath of loyalty. Surely It Is also In disobedience to the recent Second Vatican Council which decreed "IN FAITHFUL OBEDIENCE TO TRADITION, THE SACRED COUNCIL DECLARES THAT HOLY MOTHER CHURCH HOLDS ALL LAWFULLY RECOGNISED RITES TO Bl OF EQUAL RIGHT AND DIGNITY: THAT SHE WISHES TO PRESERVE THEM IN THE FUTURE AND TO FOSTER THEM IN EVERY WAY.” CATHOLIC RESEARCH CENTRE, G.P.O.
