The Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection (Mr Roy Hattersley) has said in a written reply in the House of Commons that the butter subsidy of £89.60 ($166) per long ton will be abolished from December 28, and that the cheese subsidy will be cut from the same date to £45 ($B3) from £lO9 ($202) a ton. The Chancellor’s announcement had said that butter and cheese would go up by about four pence (7.5 c a pound as a result of the phasing out of food subsidies.
