Power switching mishap
Emergency measures were taken bv the Electricity Department yesterday morning when a drop in the power supply was detected. The load on all feeder lines to the Papanui sub-station was dropped to prevent widespread overloading of substations. As a result northwest Christchurch was without power for 11 minutes from 9.57 a.m.
The district manager of the department (Mr G. B. Collie) said that a switching error at Manapouri had put all the generators out, and this resulted in a voltage drop in Christchurch. This meant that the demand was greater than the supply, and the load had to be dropped quickly to prevent sub-stations from tripping out automatically. The emergency measure prevented widespread power cuts, which would have taken much longer than 11 minutes to rectify!
