Remote Red Cross depot
PA Auckland The most southerly Red Cross depot in the world will be established when a New Zealand television crew makes a film about the wreck of the gold carrying ship General Grant. Two of the film characters, who will be played by members of the Otago Red Cross Society, will be going ashore when the film crew’s vessel, the Acheron, reaches the Auckland Islands. A special first aid emergency kit, containing
medical supplies, dressing, bandages and special foil blankets, which fold down to the size of a cigarette packet, will be left on the remote island. Although the Auckland Islands are now off the main shipping route, the possibility of a fishing vessel or yacht being wrecked there remains. The Red Cross Society felt the visit by the television crew was a good opportunity to provide some emergency items which would last for years.
