Swimming grant possibility

] PA Wellington The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association could possibly have been given a large Government grant to run the international swimming series it cancelled last week. Yesterday the secretary of| the association. Mr Roger Forster, said the series could have been salvaged had the Government given a financial guarantee. He was concerned at the $15,000 grant given to stage the Australia-New Zealand secondary schools athletic meeting next month. The Minister of Recreation and Sport, Mr Highet, said yesterday he had received a letter from the swimming association on November 29 requesting a guarantee of finance. He said he forwarded the ! [ letter to his department for al report but while awaiting ad[vice from the department he; .had heard that the meeting 1 'had been cancelled. Asked if finance would; have been made available to: the amateur swimming assoc-j iation Mr Highet said the association would have received! the same sympathetic hearing [ as the New Zealand Second-' ary Schools Athletics Association.
