Commemorative stamps
Centenaries of three New Zealand boroughs will be marked in January by the issue of commemorative
stamps. The Post Office will mark the first 100 years of Hamilton, Masterton, and Gisborne boroughs on three 8c stamps, as part of a 1977 commemorative issue.
Two others stamps in the issue, both of 10c denomination, will mark the jubilee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Automobile Association in New Zealand.
The issue of stamps, designed by Flight-Lieutneant P. L. Blackie, a technical drawing instructor in the Royal New Zealand Air Force at Hobsonville, will go on sale on January 19.
Each of the 8c centennial stamps will bear the coat of arms of the three boroughs involved.
The College of Surgeons is represented by its coat of arms bearing the Latin motto, “Fax mentis incendium gloriae." (The flame of glory is the torch of the mind).
The Automobile Association commemorative stamp bears the distinctive yellow AA sign. The issue will be accompanied by a 53c first-day cover.
