Non-stop air service

PA Auckland Auckland will be connected with the longest non-stop regular airline sendee in the world tomorrow. The first of Pan Am’s special performance Boeing 747 jumbo jets will fly in direct from San Francisco — a flight of 6900 miles — at 8.10 a.m. The aircraft, which can carry 266 passengers, will have been in the air for about 11 hours when it lands at Auckland.

The service, which will continue to Sydney, will fly into Auckland twice a week —on Fridays and Sundays. On one of the return trips from Sydney, it will fly direct to San Francisco — about 7200 miles, which will be the longest of all non-stop flights. The 747 SP is similar to the 747 jumbo but the fuselage is shorter, giving it a dumpy appearance. It flies about 50 m.p.h. faster than other jet airliners, and higher, above 40,000 ft.
