Invitation 400m for champions
An invitation 400 metres race will be held at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday in addition to the special 4min mile attempt. It will provide the runnerup in the last New Zealand senior championship, Jeff Bailey (High School Old Boys), with a chance to gauge his progress since his disappointing run some 12 days ago. Bailey was defeated by the brilliant junior, Richard Goldstone (Avon). Among Bailey’s rivals on Saturday will be the former New Zealand 800 metres champion, Bruce Hunter (University-Shirley), who is a very capable performer over the shorter distance. A former Canterbury champion, Trevor Cochrane, and Grant Anderson (both Old Boys) will also be running. Cochrane holds the Canterbury record at 47.1 sec, although he is now specialising in the 800 metres.
The New Zealand 400 metres hurdles champion, David Long, and the New Zealand 800 metres champion, Rendell Mclntosh (also Old Boys), will also be starters. Goldstone will run in a junior 800 metres event in which Andrew Stark (University - Shirley) will make an attempt on the New Zealand junior record of Imin 50sec set by David Green three years ago.
