Rich race at Rosehill
NZPA Sydney The Sydney Turf Club has joined with the Marlboro Company to stage one of the richest handicap races in the Southern Hemisphere for fillies and mares at Rosehill in March next year. The race, to be run over 1500 metres, will be known as the “Marlboro Classic” and will carry total prize money of $50,000. The “Marlboro Classic” will displace the N.S.W. The race will be run on March 12, the opening day of the Sydney Turf Club’s Golden Slipper Festival meeting. The Marlboro Company (Philip Morris) has agreed to sponsor the race for an initial three years. The company’s venture continues their strong sponsorship of racing throughout Australia which includes the $60,000 Marlboro Cup at Caulfield, the Marlboro $50,000 run in Perth next month, the $30,000 Marlboro Plate at Morphettville, South Australia and the $30,000 Marlboro Stakes at Eagle Farm, Queensland. 1
