Aust. share prices rally
Australian share prices rose across the board yesterday in their best performance since the rally generated by devaluation. Observers noted that the market was buoyed by the upturn in the irices of gold, copper and several other commodities, and by the stronger overnight trends on both Wall Street and London. Because the December loan has been ruled out bv the Government institutions are committing more funds to the equity market, observers said. Key mining and industrial stocks, particularly the ex-port-oriented ones, continued to be actively supported.
Australian Mining and Smelting, to be delisted in the wake of the C.R.A. take-over, stood out with a 20c gain to 290 c and C.R.A. itself showed a similar gain at 210 c. Hamerslev advanced 20c to 300 c, Utah 15c at 475 c, Western Mining 9c at 172 c and Central Norseman 5c at 250 c.
B.H.P. gained 28c to 618 c and C.S.R. 17c to 372 c. Retailers, Woolworths and Myers found keen support, with banks also eagerly sought. However, I.A.C. and Hooker continued to lose ground.
