Rape in marriage

Sir, — Far from enforcing Greek cultural practices, as B. Roberts suggests, Paul would have shocked Greek and Jew alike by placing husband and wife on an equal footing with regard to “conjugal rights,” and also with regard to

divorce if that was unavoidable. (First Corinthians, chapter 7.) Similarly the headship of the husband spoken of in Ephesians involves him in loving his wife as he loves himself, and beyond that, with the selfless selfsacrificing love Our Lord showed in dying for us. There is no suggestion of his being free to dominate or exploit his wife. While Paul expresses a strong preference for a life of service to Christ free from family ties, what he says of marriage is consistent with the rest of the New Testament. In any age, a husband and wife who measure their relationship against this standard, will benefit from it.—Yours, etc., E. READ. December 7, 1976. [This correspondence is closed.—Editor]
