Hallfield Star wins again
Hallfield Star carried on his winning way at Washdyke but he had to produce a run of outstanding merit to hold out the tearaway pacemaker, Golden Miller by a length. His 3min 25sec for the 2600 metres was one of the fastest recorded on the course. Hallfield Star got away splendidly from the second line and was fifth after 200 metres, however, he lost his position after 1200 m. Bill Bagrie started to Improve with him soon after but he was forced three wide on the bend. He was on terms with Golden Miller at the 1200 m and took an advantage of a length or so without really getting clear. There was little between the pair racing to the straight but it was obvious soon after that Hallfield Star was again the master. He had a length to spare at the post.
Golden Miller did well to hold on for s-econd with a gap to Kotare Charger and a shorter qne to Barossa Pearl, both of which had their chance. The others were sadly beaten. North Otago stables quinellaed the Redruth Handicap. Hunter Direct, having his first start since May and his first since being trained at Oamaru by Graham Chalmers, beat the more strongly fancied Palmerston pacer Dannyinite quite convincingly. Hunter Direct was the eleventh favourite and paid $37.40. He won by a length and a quarter from Dannymite which had his chance. Pat Nash improved from mid-field to be handy into the straight and held on for a close third, clear of Bess Hanover and Lauraine Hanover. The firm favourite. Watbro Trick, lost his chance at the start and tailed the field.
