Warragamba has deserved victory
Warragamba qualified to start in the Rangiora Cup on Saturday week when he raced away from his rivals at the end of a rou.?hly-run Highfield Handicap at Washdyke yesterday. Warragamba's win was well deserved as he has been racing most consistently and was runner-up to Regal Light at Addintgon last Saturday. The five-year-old is raced in * partnership by his Templeton trainer, Felix Newfield and Mi’ Colin McLaughlin, of Highbank. His recent form suggests he will not be hard to place over the holidays. The race was marred by a series of incidents as Select Circle fell at the 200 m checking another slow beginner in Flying Tempest. With about 600 m left the win favourite, Chaka, broke and dropped right away. Racing to the 400 m, Dragon's Dream which was improving, broke and checked a number of runners including Jascoe and King Suva. Vince gave Warragamba a perfect trail with the last named drawing out to win easily. Jascoe put in a spirited run to shade another fast finisher in Miss Pert ihy half a head for second with Sail Again and Rigid the best jof the others, although there was I merit in the sixth placing of iOlga Korbut which received a .shocking run over the last 600 m. Although only third in a close : finish to tne West End Handicap. iAurum Bay recorded a splendid I trial for the Waimate Cup on Saturday. The race resulted in a good win for Kiwi Kid which was a firm favourite. He was | always prominently placed and
: joined the leaders starting the' [run home and fought on best to i win by a length. ' Glentara, three back on the ! i inner mostly, came fast along j [the rails to take second from' the unlucky Aurum Bay. She was awkwardly placed on the! | inner well back in the field but! received a splendid run to be; handy starting the last 200 m. She; could not get a run along the; [inner and the race was as good ias over when Brian O'Carroll [switched her wide. She came; [home at a great rate and was [only half a length back third [with noses to Royal Abdullah. i Charlie Wood and Avenge. Van-, [kee Transit came home well to head the others.
