Apartheid opponents meet M.P.
A deputation from three anti-apartheid groups in the Rakaia area met their M.P. (Mr C. C. McLachlan) to discuss the Government’s attitude to South Africa. The deputation told Mr McLachlan that the groups were very concerned about the continued presence of a South African consulate, which was giving out proapartheid propaganda. They wanted the Government to replace the consulate with diplomatic representation for African States opposed to apartheid. The deputation also wanted the Government to oppose the recruitment of New Zealanders as mercenaries in the Rhodesian conflict. Government support for the liberation movements in southern Africa was also sought. The group asked that scholarships for refugees from southern Africa be set up in New Zealand schools and universities. It asked that its statement be sent to the Minister of State (Sir Keith Holyoake) and the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Taiboys).
