Surf rescuers exhausted
PA Auckland, Piha surf life-savers were left exhausted after a week-, end of rescuing dozens of bathers from a hole formed, by a rip near the middle of the beach. About 45 people were rescued from the hole on Sunday, and about 14 people got into difficulties on Saturday. The club’s patrol captain, Stephen Bootten. said the hole formed about 30 yards Off the beach, and the rip worsened as the tide -ent out in the early afternoon. | ' About eight of the surf patrol were in the! water continually from 1.301

Later in the afternoon many of the club mem- : bers were too tired to continue patrols, and a speedboat helped with the rescues.
