House with a history

You enter the carpark along a sweeping driveway. Tall trees and well established shrubbery surround the house and drive. Cars can park right alongside the house and it’s a short stroll to the entrance of the elegant villa. Contrary to what might be expected, the house is a lighting and furniture store. Until recently the house was occupied by Mr and Mrs R. J. Andrews. Mr Andrews is the great grandson of the founder of one of Christchurch’s oldest firms — Thomas Andrews and Sons, Ltd, sculptors of plaster decorative pieces for more than 112 years. Evidence of their master craftsmanship is displayed

throughout the home. The high, decorated ceilings, wall plaques and room columns lend an elegance to the house that is strongly reminiscent of the grand old homes of Britain and Europe. La Lumiere, realising the potential of this unusual home, made an offer for the house when it went up for sale. Then followed many months of carefully planned renovations, restoration and additions to the house, including a warehouse, office area and extra showrooms. It now comprises a total of 1300 square metres and is one of the largest lighting and furniture stores in the South Island. A whole new wing was

added to the original house where offices, reception area, museum and lighting displays are located. The museum is an unusual touch in a store of this kind. Many interesting artefacts are housed here, some dating from early pioneer days. The articles were acquired while La Lumiere buyers were seeking out antiques and bric-a-brac to stock the Christchurch store. The ornate cash register used in the store is also the genuine article and fits in well with the old world atmosphere. After browsing through the store, customers may find it hard to resist a few moments relaxation in La Lumiere’s Coffee Bar.

In this cosy, intimate corner of the store you can take a break from shopping with a cup of tea or coffee. OPENING SHORTLY A compact motel unit is attached to La Lumiere’s showroom. Fully furnished, tastefully lit and decorated, the unit is used by La Lumiere consultants to demonstrate the fittings and merchandise available through their company for owners, and prospective owners, of business premises of any kind. In between times visiting La Lumiere personnel may use the unit during their stay in Christchurch. La Lumiere predict that this extra service for commercial clients will receive a warm welcome from Christchurch builders, architects and businessmen.
