N.Z. borrowing now $1000M
PA • Wellington New Zealand has now borrowed more than SIOOOM since the National Party took office, Mr M. E. Courtney (Lab., Nelson) said in a written statement. After receiving answers to questions sent to the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon), he said the Government had borrowed S6IBM itself, adding the latest I.M.F. loan to the 5554 M admitted to by Mr Muldoon in Parliament on November 19.
The private sector had borrowed SII4M, Government corporations S2B6M, including the latest Maui loan of SS4M. The grand total was SIOIBM and the figure did not include some refinancing of previous loans. It was also doubtful that the figure included harbour board development loans raised overseas.
Mr Courtney said that Mr Muldoon had presented himself to the electorate as “the man who was going to stop borrowing.”
