New award for fertiliser men

A new award for South Island chemical manure workers has been settled in conciliation talks in Dunedin. The workers went on strike for 48 hours and banned overtime in September when the talks broke down. They were claiming a 25 per cent wage increase and other allowance increases.

The talks resumed yesterday in Dunedin and were settled, although the settlement still has to go to the Industrial Commission for approval. The workers are members of the Meat Workers’ Union. Their advocate (Mr Jim Sneddon) said last evening that he was “quite happy" with the settlement. He declined to reveal details. Work is continuing at Kempthorne and Prosser’s fertiliser works at Hornbv.

The manager (Mr M. Blowers) said last evening

'that no decision had yet [been given by the mediator j(Mr P. Cranston), who presided over a meeting of the parties last Friday on the dispute about the works’ water supply. 1
