'Muzza' among world’s best
Murray Inglis, who was once told bv the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation that he would never succeed in broadcasting, has I been named “’South Pacific ! radio personality of the year.” The award was made at the international 1976 ’‘Billboard” magazine radioprogramming forum in New Orleans Murray, Radio Avon’s breakfast announcer, has worked for the station j since it first began three. years and a half ago. The award was accepted on , his behalf bv Radio Avon’s executive director (Mr Noel Wesney), who is at the forum i with the station’s programme director (Mr Graeme Parsonage) “They rang me on Sundav I night and talked for a while about a Bee Gees concert thev nad seen. Then, they told me about the award and I was absolutely knocked out.' I still haven't come back to earth,” Murrav xaid yesterday. * •
This is the first time a' New Zealand radio station' has won an award at the! forum, which has been held! I annually for the last nine! •years. Murrav Inglis wasl .also one of eight finalists in j the grand international per-| sonality award, which was won by a New’ York disc' • jockey. As his entry in the com-! petition, Murray, known to! listeners as “Muzza.” sent an i hour-long tape which inclu-l ded a hoax toll-call to Presi-’j dent Idi Amin of Uganda.! jokes, news, and a weather! report. Murrav intends staying ■ I with Radio Avon, and enjoys I doing the breakfast session, i “It’s not as restricted as I .other shifts, and I don’t! Ihave to be a ‘hip’ disc joc-l key,” he said. Eventually, he would like! to be a programme manager, I perhaps for a radio station! in Sydney. He is now await-' ing the return of Mr Wesney,! so that he can firafcout what i his award looks ®e. j
