Table tennis to Armstrong
Stuart Armstrong, the pro-, vince’s top-ranked junior, won the under 21 and under 17 singles titles at the Canterbury junior summer table tennis tournament at the week-end. The 16-year-old Riccarton player was opposed in both finals by his dub-mate, Michael Hamel, who is ranked one position behind Armstrong on the New Zealand and Canterburyrankings. Hamel went colse to victory in the under 21 event, when he won the first game and was beaten at advantage points in the second, but Armstrong was decidedly superior in the third. It was a similar story in the under 17 final; Hamel won the first game, but Armstrong recovered to take the second and win the third decisively. Hamel had a good win against the fifth - ranked Canterburysenior Harry Redmond, in the semi-finals of the under 21 singles, and Armstrong accounted] for Kevin Duffy, who is ranked: one place ahead of Armstrong ini the senior rankings.
Duffy and Redmond gained some consolation when they teamed together to beat Armstrong and Hamel in the final of the under 21 doubles. Results were:— Under 2) Boys singles.—Semi-finals: M. J. Hamel beat H. H. Redmond. 21-IS, 17-21, 21-12; S. G. Armstrong beat K. F. Duffy. 21-14. 21-15. Final: Armstrong beat Hamel, 16-21, 23-21, 21-12. Boys doubles. — Semi-finals: Duffy and Redmond beat T. Sargent and A. CampbeU. 21-10, 21-19; Armstrong and Hamel beat R. H. Dixon and G. Foster, 21-17, 21-19. Final: Duffy and Redmond beat Armstrong and Hamel, 21-10, 21-17. Girls singles. — Round-robin: Miss D. Daycock 1. Doubles: J. ChisnaU and K. Perry beat N. and M. Havler, 21-16, 21-13. Under 17 Boys singles.—Final: Armstrong beat G. Halliburton, Hamel, 15-21, 21-16, 21-15. Doubles: Armstrong and Hamel beat S. Cairns and J. Simmons. 21-17, 21-19. Girls singles (round-robin): N, Havler 1. Girls doubles (final): N. and M. Havler beat M. Brice and K. Perry, 21-15, 21-14. Under 14 Boys singles.—Semi-finals: J. Devereux beat M. Scott, 21-19, 21-17; M. Prlsk beat D. Jarvis, 21-17, 21-18. Final: Frisk beat Devereux, 21-11, 21-9. Girls singles (round-robin): H. Thompson 1. Doubles (final): D. Windsor and J. Rhind beat Thompson and A. Fitzwilliam, 21-12. 21-16.
