Bruce Deacon to ride in England
PA New Plymouth The Hawera jockey, Bruce Deacon. has accepted an offer to ride in England and will leave in less than a fortnight to join up with the Berkshire trainer, S. Mellor.
The Cambridge trainer and horse dealer, Ken Browne, who has arranged the trip for Dea, con, has been closely associated with Mellor in recent seasons.
Browne hag sent many jumpers to England and Mellor has trained them with considerable success.
Deacon, because of sharply increasing weight, has ridden little in the last year. However, with a higher weight scale in operation in England he will have little trouble riding jumpers at the bottom of the handicap.
During Ms riding career, Deacon established a sound reputation as a rider over obstacles and several of Ills tally of 53 wins were gained in this field. It is not known at tMs stage how long Deacon will be in England but if, as he hopes, he rides his share of winners, it could be some time before he returns home.
Deacon has been riding regular trackwork for his father, the trainer, Brian Deacon, in recent months and by watching his diet has had little trouble losing some of his recent weight of 66kg.
