Early start on big crane
The assemly of Lyttelton's $3 million container crane will btart next Monday—more than four weeks ahead of the contractor’s schedule According to the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s publication “Portside” the early start has j been made possible by the arrival from Australia of ! machinery and sections of the ; drive mechanism three weeks I ahead of schedule. Kuril i and Company, of Christchurch, and the four legs, weighing 15 tonnes each and built in Dunedin, have also arrived on time. The crane will weigh a total of 555 tonnes and will be a* sembied al Cashin Quay by Vickers Hoskins, Ltd. It is expected to be in operation about April next year. Once assembled the ciane will stand 75 metres above the wharl but it will be painted in colours to blend in with the Lyttelton skyline and surrounding hills. The tracks on which the crane will run are being welded by,' the Railways and will be laid by Harbour Board staff At 86 kllo-j grams a metre the tracks are approximately double the service I weight of normal railway lines.
