Solo parents and social welfare
Sir, — From the article on solo parents (November 26) it is clear that attitudes held by Department of Social Welfare officials contribute noth-
ing to the development of relationships between women and men. The official said that if a man was sleeping < with a woman three or four nights a week he should be supporting her. This suggests (that the Social Welfare view is that women sleep with men for money and, if the money is not forthcoming, there is something wrong and the woman is "cheating” if she receives a Domestic Purposes Benefit. It may be news to the department that people sleep together for a variety of reasons which are mainly related to love, affection, friendship and support, but rarely related to money. Maybe the department should think again. — Yours, etc., PAULINE BARNETT, AILSA SOMERVILLE, CHRISTINE FRANKEL,
ANNE STEPHENSON. November 26, 1976.
