Bill backed by teachers
PA Wellington A bill allowing a “cooling off” period in cases where a pupil may be suspended from school has been reported back to Parliament by the Education Committee. The Education Amendment (No. 2) Bill had been universally approved by the teaching profession, said the committee chairman, Mr J. G. Elliott (Nat., Whangarei). Under the bill, parents of pupils suspended for gross misconduct or incorrigible disobedience may request a meeting with the school principal and, if necessary, a school inspector. Pupils under 15 suspended for unspecified terms may return to school after seven days,- unless the suspension is extended.
