Babies die in hospital
NZPA-Reuter San Juan Five babies have died in a public hospital in the Puerto Rican city of Ponce, and 19 are seriously ill, the health authorities have reported. Salmonella bacteria, associated with food poisoning, are believed to be responsible. Dr Giordano San Antonia, director of the Ponce District Hospital, said further laboratory tests were being made to obtain a definite diagnosis. Some 35 women in the hospital’s maternity ward were moved and sent to other health cinics in the city.
Legislation on strikes
The Queensland State Government has decided to rush through legislation to deal with union bans involving non-industrial matters. The Premier (Mr Joh BjelkePetersen), said that the measure proposed would deal with political strikes and bans, and that penalties were being considered. He added that the Minister of Industrial Relations (Mr Fred Campbell) would present a draft bill to the Cabinet on Monday. — Brisbane.
