Police break up march

NZPA-Reuter Cape Town Riot police armed with batons broke up a march by about 100 singing and chanting blacks through the centre of Cape Town on Friday, eyewitnesses said.

The police refused to comment on the march, describing it as a “minor event.” The eyewitnesses said several Africans were struck over the head, but there was no sign of serious injuries. The blacks gathered in the city centre and marched down three central streets before the police arrived in three trucks and surrounded them.

The marchers sang “freedom” songs in the Xhosa language and carried placards claiming that more than 600 people had been killed in racial unrest in South Africa since the riots erupted on June 16 in the black township of Soweto, near Johannesburg.
