Fine swimming by Binning

The exceptional 12-y ear-old Wharenui swimmer. Rickie Binning. dominated the preliminaries of the national Teleprinter swimming carnival at Queen Elizabeth H Park on Saturday evening. She broke records in each event she entered.

Her best effort was in the 100 m breaststroke where she beat the Canterbury champion, Tracy Turnbull, herself only 13, and equaUed the Canterbury senior, junior, 13 years, and 12 years records set by Miss Turnbull last season. Miss Binning’s time was Imin 19.6 sec.

Swimming in the same event. Miss Turnbull (Wharenui) could not match the sprint of her team-mate over the last 25m, and had to be conent wih second place behind Miss Binning. The top age-group swimmers in Canterbury took part in the carnival, the finals of which will be held in two weeks on a nation-wide basis. The top seven in each event in Christchurch will be competing for places in the southern zone finals against swimmers from Eastern Districts, Otago, and Southland. The finals are held in three centres simultaneously. and Cambridge and Palmerston North are the other venues this year. At the Canterbury preliminaries, six provincial records were broken and five equalled, a good omen for the finals, and while entries in some events were very thin, times were generally of a good standard. Miss Binning broke the first record—in the 100 m freestyle. Her time of Imin 4.7 sec took o.2sec off the girls’ 12 years and 13 years records she set a week ago at a Canterbury centre carnival.

Two other girls. Denise Head and Sharon Semmens (both Wharenui), also recorded good times, and Canterbury has a good chance of filling the first three places in the southern zone finals, and possibly the national final.

The versatile Miss Binning broke her next record In the 100 m backstroke. She sliced I.2sec off her own 12 years record set also a week ago.

In tlie same event, her Wharenui club-mate, Sandra Tully, equalled the 13 years record with a time of Imin Il.4sec. The record is her own and Trudi Garland's. It should only be a matter of time before Miss Tully establishes a new mark for the event.

Grant Forbes (North Beach) broke the boys’ 12 years 100 m breaststroke record—the only bovs’ record broken at the carnival. His new mark of Imin 24.0 sec took o.4sec from the previous time set by the former New Zealand representative. Brent Lewis.

Not content with three records tn three events. Miss Binning reserved her greatest effort for her final race, the 200 m individual medley. She won by about 10m and chopped a remarkable 2.4 sec off her own record with a new time of 2min 34.45ec.

The first heat of the girls’ 10 and 11 > ears 100 m freestyle was a judges’ nightmare. Only o.4sec separated the first four, but the winner was Elizabeth Horner (Wharenui). She also won the 100 m butterfly later on the programme. Kerry Sharpies and Kim Dewar (both Wharenui) and NgMrita Kahi (New Brighton) were other winners in this age group where all races were closely contested.

The boys 12 and 13 years age group was dominated by Garry Connor (New Brighton) and Brent Connor (Rangiora), who each recorded the fastest tunes in two events. Heats jn this section were closely fought, although the 100 m butterfly only attracted two entries.

In the boys 10 and 11 years group. Kara Taumaunu (Sockburn Park) won three events he entered by good margins, and narrowly missed the Canterbury

record for an 11-year-old in the 100 m backstroke.

Another Binnings. Lisa, a younger sister of Rickie, dominated the girls nine years and under age-group. taking the fastest time in all four events. In the 100 m freestyle she was more than llsec ahead of the second place-getter and had the fastest time in the other three events by more than four seconds. Maui Stuart (New Brighton) had the best times in two of the boys under nine events — the freestyle and butterfly. Abbreviations used in the results, which give the three fastest times, are: New Brighton (N. 8. North Beach (Nth.B), Rangiora (R.), Sockbum Park (S.P.), Wharenui (Wh.).
