French wins road race
The New Brighton athlete, Ray French, came home! strongly to win the annual: N. C. Wakefield 15 mile interclub road race from a record field of more than 1110 from the Xavier College! grounds to Redcliffs and re-1 turn on Saturday. In spite of cold blustery; Iweather, the former Canteribury cross-crountry champion Frank Brookes (Technical) came within 20 secs of the course record to take fastest time of 1 hr 19 min 48 sec. The University club pair, Pat Bodger and Dave Roiwell, ran well to take second and third fastest times. In i the veterans’ section the former Canterbury cross-1 I country champion, Clarriej i Reece (New Brighton), ran ibis best 15 mile time tor more than 10 years to. record the fastest veterans’! time of 1 hr 23 min 58 sec for fourth placing over all. He ran marginally faster I than the New Zealand crossI country representative, John Tecldan (Olympic). ing and sixth fastest time. He was not far behind his brother Clarry in terms of j time. The Queen of the Mountains titleholder, June Miles; (Olympic), the mother of i four children repeated her success in last Saturday’s! race to take the first women’s placing. The Canterbury veteran cross-country champion, Doris May (University), took fastest women’s time of 1 hr 54 min 36 sec. She came home with a fine sprint finish with the veteran Bob Heseltine (Olympic), whose wife, Gwyn, was well up in the field. Results: R. French iN.B.i 1:48.25, 1; I).
