Petition signed by 271,000
PA Auckland The anti-nuclear petition, Campaign Half Million, was closer to living up to its name when it announced the closing of its signature collection with a total of 271,000 signatures. This beat the Save Manapouri petition, which had collected 265,000 signatures.
The national organiser for the campaign, Mrs Raewyn Mackenzie, said she was very happv with the result, but the job had only begun. "What is interesting about the campaign is the way the climate has changed in New Zealand on the nuclear issue,” she said. “It is more than just a petition — we educated the public, and I would say that everyone now thinks twice about the nuclear problem.” Signatures came from New Zealanders in such diverse places as the United States, London, the Akaroa lighthouse, China, and the protest ship Fri.
