Rating talks delayed
Differential rating talks were delayed for a month last night by the Christchurch City Council. As the Audit Office has not yet replied to a question on how councillors’ interest could affect such talks, a solicitor has advised the council to postpone discussion of the matter. Many councilors own property which would be affected by rating differentials, and some feel that they would be participating when they had a monetary interest in the rating issue.
The Audit Office has been asked to tell the council whether this business can be exempted from the Local Authorities (Members’ Interests) Act, Several North Island local bodies, including the Wellington City Council, went ahead with differential rating without seeking a legal opinion on that aspect. The Mayor (Mr Hamish Hay) said a month’s delay would not affect the ability to bring residential ratepayers relief through 1977-78 differentials.
