Remand in custody

PA Invercargill A 32-year-old unemployed Dunedin man, James Vernon Darling, was remanded without plea in the Invercargill Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning on charges of robbery and theft of a motor car. Darling allegedly robbed a 68-year-old crippled woman of $7 in cash from her Riverton home on Saturday afternoon. Mr I. Hay, S.M., said it was a serious charge in the circumstances and remanded him in custody to today. Police and Ministry of Transport officers brought in patrol cars to search the surrounding districts after the woman telephoned the Riverton police. Darling was apprehended near Orawia at 4.45 p.m. the same day. He was in possession of a 1968 Austin 1100 reported missing from Dunedin on October 3.
